The following paragraphs from the 2nd edition of Dr. Gordon Pederson’s book “A Fighting Chance” provide insight into older silver technologies:
What is Silver Sol and How Does it Work?
Silver Sol, in essence, is simply silver particles dispersed in purified water. The term “Sol” is a chemical designation of a pure mineral permanently suspended is water where the mineral’s charge is transferred to the entire body of water. Differences between preparations are plenty; however, the silver concentration and the size of the particles can vary greatly, as can the bioavailability of the silver and the effectiveness of the solution. There are also variances in the purity of the solution. Solutions made with metallic silver are tested to be more potent than other silver preparations, such as those made with ionic silver. You may have heard of colloidal silver and ionic silver. While these can be effective solutions, I prefer the new silver technology called Silver Sol, also called Silver Aquasol technology.
Silver Sol preparations are manufactured by a completely different method, that in my opinion produces a far superior result. Silver sol technology uses 10,000 volts of alternating current (AC), while the old colloids use 110 volts of direct current (DC). This significant increase in power essentially supercharges the silver, which results in a solution that has a different atomic structure than the colloids and ionics. The common colloid is missing one electron in its outer shell, which is why it can remove an electron from the bacteria and destroy it.
In this way, colloids and ionic silvers have been very successful in destroying bacterial infections. Silver Sol is an Ag 404; it is missing two electrons in its outer shell, which consequently gives it catalytic capabilities. This capability can be described as one electron destroying bacteria, viruses, and mold while the other electron is being recharged. This catalytic conversion allows the Silver Sol to first destroy then to instantaneously recharge and “kill” again and again – like a rapid-fire machine gun. The result is that Silver Sol can destroy thousands of time more pathogens than a simple colloid or ionic silver. This means that Silver Sol can be much more effective at a very safe concentration (5-20 parts per million_, which can potentially be consumed every day.
These newer silver preparations rely on engineered nano-particle solutions with higher bioavailability, effectiveness and safety. Metallic silver gives off ultra-violet radiation in narrow wavelengths. These wavelengths are tested to destroy a wide range of pathogens. The narrow wavelength energy radiated from silver produces free radicals that damage their DNA beyond repair. Silver doesn’t even need direct contact with the microbe to create this effect.
Simply put, silver solutions interfere with the energy sources of bacteria, viruses and other microbes. The process is a bit complicated, but basically the charge of silver replaces needed hydrogen atoms, and the result is that it blocks energy sources that microbes need. This reaction can happen within minutes of exposure.
Because silver affects such a basic mechanism of normal microbial function, it is effective against a broad range of pathogens. Even if DNA or RNA structure varies or the mode of attack varies, the basic structure of the pathogen is the same and can be addressed by silver’s non-traditional mode of attack. While typical drugs or antibiotics are effective against six or seven microbes, silver preparations are effective against more than 500 different disease-causing pathogens without encouraging drug resistance and without side effects. And a little goes a long way.

Silver Solution vs. Suspension
When discussing silver preparations, it is important to note the difference between a suspension and a solution. Basically, the difference is in the fineness of particles dispersed. Although particles in a suspension can’t be seen, they are still large enough to settle at the bottom of the container over time. But electrically charged ions in a solution will not settle after weeks, months or years. The ideal silver solution perfectly straddles the line between a solution and a suspension because it maintains its molecular identity without large particles settling. While too small particles do not have the correct reactivity, particles of the proper size are more readily absorbed and more catalytically effective at killing pathogens before they are excreted by the body.
Not All Silver is Equal
Not all silver is equally effective. Old silver products were often brown or yellow. They contained more silver but were far less effective, often requiring 50,000 to 300,000 ppm (parts per million) of silver to kill a harmful pathogen. The new silver solution is colorless, odourless, and exhibits only a faint metallic aftertaste. It can terminate entire colonies of harmful bacteria at concentrations of 5 ppm or less.
Likewise, not all new silver products are the same. One product on the market has been shown to inhibit the growth of E. coli at 1,500 ppm. Silver Sol has been shown to kill E. coli at a concentration of only 2.5 to 5.0 ppm. That is several hundred times more effective than the colloids or ionic silver preparations.
Silver Sol is also much more bio-available than other silver technologies on the market. That means more of the silver is readily absorbed and utilized in the body. Researchers at Brigham Young University tested many current silver products. These products were found to have bioavailabilities between 15 and 65 percent. Silver Sol was then tested. It was non only more effective against microbes in laboratory tests, its bioavailability exceeded 99 percent.
Silver’s Attack Strategies – Chemical Structure/Contact
Silver Sol particles are tiny enough to be absorbed into a single red blood cell. Pure silver is supercharged and surrounded by a chemical shell that is missing two electrons (called ionic because it carries a charge.) This means the tiny silver particle wants to attach to the thin cell walls of pathogens and remove one or two electrons. This leaves a hole in the cell membrane and kills the pathogen. Normal cells have thicker, more protective cell membranes that have a balanced charge, resulting in selective protection from the silver’s oxide coating that kills bacteria on contact.
There are healthy and unhealthy resonances. For example, imagine a vibrating back massager compared to the jolting frequency of a jackhammer. In a similar way, silver resonates at a frequency selectively destructive to pathogens. In fact, it has been measured to resonate at 890 to 910 terahertz. This is the same frequency at which germicidal ultraviolet light resonates. Imagine now tiny silver particles that are small enough to be absorbed into the red blood cells, and resonate at the perfect frequency to destroy bacteria, viruses, and yeast. These tiny “flashlights” circulate throughout every capillary in the body, disinfecting from the inside.
Magnetic Disruption of Viral DNA
A virus is constructed of a capsid that contains incomplete segments of DNA and RNA. These DNA segments carry a slight magnetic charge. There is a claw on the outside of the virus that attaches the virus to a healthy cell. Once the virus is attached to a healthy cell it can “inject” the incomplete DNA into the healthy cell, producing damage to the normal DNA and causing it to reproduce abnormally. This can cause viral diseases like influenza, hepatitis, and cervical cancer.
The new supercharged silver acts like a magnet that attracts the charged DNA particles. The DNA binds so tightly to the silver that it makes a chaotic tangle of incomplete genetic material that can never lengthen out, so it can never go through replication. This inactivates the virus and prevents replication of viral disease. Normal cells have thicker, more protected cell membranes with a balanced charge, which protects them from the silver’s magnetic attraction.
Most cells communicate through a sugary coating. This coating lets the cell know friend from foe. Silver has a “friendly” sugar coating that allows it to positively communicate with cells. This way, silver nano-particles can enter into an abnormal cell and attack pathogens before they have a chance to replicate.
What the Research Says
Research on silver is broad and spans several decades. Reputable labs at the University of Georgia, Kansas State University, Penn State, Arizona State University, University of Arizona, University of California at Davis, and Brigham Young University are among those that have completed research supporting silver’s use in fighting microbial infection.
An MD testimonial letter reported the effective us of silver in more than 50 cases involving patients with viral pneumonia, as well as those with ear infections, infectious fibromyalgia, Sjorgen’s syndrome, rheumatic arthritis, systemic Candida, staph, gingivitis, Lyme disease, HIV, ringworm, psoriasis, genital herpes, and herpes zoster.
In another study testing the effect of silver on the growth rate of spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi (the cause of Lyme disease) it was found that even low concentrations (between 2 and 10 ppm) were enough to visibly inhibit the bacteria.
A study out of Brigham Young University (BYU) testing the effectiveness of silver preparations on a wide range of microbes found that silver was a broad-spectrum antimicrobial able to kill a large variety of pathogens. In fact, none of the pathogens tested survived silver exposure.
Another BYU study compared the effect of silver with five antibiotics on seven different pathogens: E. coli B, E aerogenes, E cloacae, S typhimunium, P aeruginosa, S gordonii, and S aureus. While silver was able to kill all bacteria tested, the antibiotics did not work equally well on all bacteria.
Although some antibiotics were effective on some bacteria, only silver had effective results on all seven. A study out of the University of California at Davis also found silver to be effective against yeast S. cerevisae variant montrachet. One dose of silver at a concentration of 15 ppm was an effective inhibitor. Candida albicans was also inhibited at silver concentrations of 10 ppm or less. This is significant because fungal infections are especially hard to treat and are often resistant to drug treatments.
Silver is also useful in water treatment. Its ability to kill waterborne pathogens was tested in 1999 at a Utah lab. Low-level silver solutions were used on untreated river water and a 10-ppm concentration was effective in killing all bacteria colonies in less than four minutes. Another study tested on 50 gallons of raw sewage containing 7,000 E. coli cells per milliliter. After three hours of being flushed with silver electrodes, the sewage was contamination free.
Research on silver as a treatment for hepatitis B is also promising. When compared with standard hepatitis treatment, which doesn’t cure the disease but does slow its progress, silver offered 89 percent inhibition without side effects. Standard treatment has a mere 18 percent effectiveness and is accompanied by several side effects.
When doctors in Ghana used silver preparation to treat resistant strains of malaria, all 50 patients showed no sign of blood parasites after five days of treatment.
Silver preparations were effectively used by one doctor to treat more than 50 cases of viral pneumonia with great success. The growth rate of spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, the cause of Lyme disease, was inhibited at even low concentrations of between 2 and 10 ppm according to another recent study.
A study out of Brigham Young University found silver to be a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that inhibited or killed all pathogens tested. Silver Sol was more effective than 19 antibiotics in killing seven different bacteria.
